AIM OF IPSIGN

Team IPSIGN

We decided to create a project aimed at promoting French Sign Language and raising awareness about Deaf culture within our school environment: IPSIGN. Our project is structured around three main objectives. First, we aim to organize conferences in order to inform students about the importance of LSF, the history of Deaf communication barriers that Deaf individuals still face today. Second, we seek to offer introductory lessons to teach the basics of LSF, allowing students to discover a new form of communication and encouraging more inclusive interactions within the school community. Finally, we plan to organize an annual workshop, held around the International Day of Sign Languages, which provides a more interactive and participatory experience.

One of our main motivations is the desire to contribute to a more inclusive environment. We realized that very few students in our school had any knowledge of LSF or awareness of Deaf culture. As a result, communication between hearing and Deaf individuals remain limited. Another important motivation is the cultural and linguistic richness of LSF itself. Many people mistakenly believe that sign language is universal or simply a visual translation of spoken French. In reality, LSF is a complete language with its own grammar, syntax, and cultural dimensions. Discovering this aspect of sign language helped us understand that promoting LSF also means recognizing the cultural identity of Deaf communities. In addition, we believe that awareness and education play a key role in reducing stereotypes and misconceptions. By organizing conferences and educational activities, we hope to encourage students to reflect on these issues and develop a more inclusive perspective. IPSIGN also reflects values that are important in engineering and higher education more generally: collaboration, accessibility, innovation, and social impact.

On this website you can register to these conferences and sessions as well as for the workshop day.
